The Perfect City
Group A: Cairo vs. London vs. Sao Paulo
Group B: Santiago vs. Paris vs. Los Angeles
Group C: Mexico City vs. Mumbai vs. Tel Aviv
Group D: Shanghai vs. Johannesburg vs. New York
Group E: Paris vs. Luanda vs. Chicago
You will conduct a comparative analysis of the three major world cities listed above. Follow the directions and use websites to help you find the necessary information needed to assess what your city MUST have and what your city MUST NOT have. You will provide a geographical analysis of each of these existing cities and then showcase YOUR perfect city.
Part 1
1. Create a list of the issues each city faces. Make sure to include why each item in your list is a pro or con and try and use vocab from this unit.
2. Identify the site and the situation of each city and explain how these factors benefit or do not benefit the city.
3. Analyze which city model provided in your textbook fits best with each of the three cities. Explain where and how residential, industrial and retail areas are situated and how this does and does not reflect the model.
4. Describe anything about each city in terms of the concepts that exist within your text, notes and GRA (you must use vocabulary, models and theories and be specific and highlight concepts)
Part 2
You are a city planner who is currently planning the world’s most perfect city. You have been assigned to assess the pros and cons of some of the world’s most influential cities in order to better understand what you need to form your perfect city. Your city can be located anywhere and can be organized in any way you believe is best. Remember, your city must include all of the most advantageous elements possible.
5. Now draw your perfect city! See if you can not any issues you analyzed previously and how you solved these issues; include the following terms below in relation to your perfect city. In addition to your drawing, you should also include a key and explanation of your choices.
Terms to identify, explain and include in YOUR city you can use others provided they come from your notes, text or GRA–
Include at least 4 of the following terms in your explanation.
-Location and Types of Services - Central Place – Market Area/ Hinterland –Optimal Location within a market -Command and Control Centers -Specialization –Central Business District (CBD) -Land Cost – Skyscrapers – Basic and non-basic industries -Rank-size rule – Economic base
