Things to think about when making your city

First off, feel free to use the information found in the national geographic website. You could add to that by looking at what wikipedia has to offer on urban sprawl and new urbanism. You can also check out newurbanism.org. But that should only help you for part of the way. You can also think about whether or not your city should be a post-industrial city or not. Recall what job sectors are out there and how a city that was post-industrial would differ from an industrial city. Look at the city models in the chapter and then create your own model based off of those ideas. There is no reason why you have to have just one picture. You could have one design which shows where the differing jobs sectors are within your city. You could have another design to show the street layout and then another to show how the housing, business or other areas are designed. Also think about the Central Place Theory. How would that effect where you would set things up? Is this a small town near a city or a large suburb on the outskirts of a major city or is this a major city in and of itself. How would you deal with the issue of gentrification? How do you ensure that you have a variety of people from a variety of income level groups or is that what you want? How would you set up your city services (police, fire, etc)? Do you want to encourage people to meet in some sort of town center? Will you have public transportation or not? In what type of country do you want to put your city? Do you want to have a gated community within your area and why? How would you set up the streets? Do you want alleys like here? Would you allow rail lines into the city center? Where would you have factories or will you have any at all? Will your city have multiple nuclei's? Will you have bike paths, a beach or parks or a town center, or a center for shopping and restaurants? Did your city have a problem in the past with redlining or blockbusting and how has the effected it? Just look at the concepts in the chapter and think about the ideas there and allow that to take you in a variety of directions and then feel free to add some ideas of your own. You need to use any 25 vocab words from the recent units.
